Biography

Born in Okayama Prefecture in 2002. 山本海月 started playing drums at age nine. In 2013, he joined the Okayama Junior Jazz Orchestra and began performing mainly in jazz settings. In 2015, he entered the Okayama Nextage Jazz Contest for the first time and received the Excellence Award for three consecutive years. In 2018, he joined the pop band “Imai Motoki to Mizuki to Yugo,” appearing in many live performances and radio programs, and in 2021 the band successfully held a solo concert at one of Okayama Prefecture’s largest live houses. In 2019, he was selected as support drummer for the club jazz band “AIter Ego,” expanding his activities through events in and outside Okayama. In 2021, he moved to Tokyo for university and began performing in the greater Tokyo area. In 2022, he launched “ROOTs,” a leader project performing his original compositions. In 2024, he released the 1st single “ROOTs,” which charted at No. 8 in the Jazz category of the iTunes Store. In 2025, he released the 2nd single “Sprint(feat. Yusuke Shima),” drawing attention for his collaboration with renowned trumpeter Yusuke Shima. He continues to gain momentum, with many leader shows across Japan selling out.

He has performed with Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Calmera, BLACK BOTTOM BRASS BAND, Terumasa Hino (Tp), Eric Miyashiro (Tp), Yusuke Shima (Tp), Ryo Miyachi (Ba), and others. (Honorifics omitted, in no particular order)
